An external wall covered in green algae or streaked with rain dirt drags the kerb appeal of an entire property down. Wall cleaning is one of the most cost-effective things you can do before a sale, a letting or just to make your home feel cared for again. We pressure wash and soft-wash external walls across the North East — render, brick, painted finishes, garden walls and boundary walls included.
The trick with walls is matching pressure to material. Render and painted finishes don't tolerate aggressive pressure; aim too high and you'll blow the finish off in patches. Garden walls in stone and brick will take more, but mortar joints are still the weak point. Our team reads the wall before they touch a trigger, and the results show in the finish.
Wall types we clean

Why walls need cleaning
External walls collect a film of dirt, dust and pollutants over the years, often invisible until you compare a cleaned section to the rest. Worse, on north-facing or shaded walls, algae and lichen establish themselves and turn the wall green. On render in particular, this isn't just unsightly — algae holds moisture against the finish, which can cause blistering or staining over time.
A professional wall clean lifts all of this in one visit. The wall comes back to its original colour, biocide treatment slows the return of organic growth, and a year or two from now the wall still looks fresh.
Soft washing vs pressure washing
On render and painted walls, pure pressure washing is rarely the right approach. The pressure can blow off the surface coat or chip the paint, especially around fixings, joints and damaged areas. Instead, we use soft washing — a low-pressure spray of water plus a specialist biocide that kills algae, moss and lichen at the root. The biocide does the work; the wall is rinsed clean rather than blasted clean.
Soft washing has two big advantages on rendered walls: it's much safer for the substrate, and it kills the organisms that cause green discolouration so they don't come back as quickly. Most rendered walls we soft-wash stay looking clean for two to three years.
Garden wall cleaning
Garden walls — boundaries, retaining walls and free-standing walls in the garden — are usually built in brick or stone and tolerate higher pressure. We clean off algae, moss, lichen, ivy residue and old paint splashes, taking care around mortar joints. Loose pointing is reported back to you so you can decide whether to have it repointed.
Stone walls in particular look incredible after a clean — the original colour and texture of the stone is restored, and the wall feels like a feature again rather than a backdrop.
Will it damage my render?
Not when soft-washed correctly. The whole point of soft washing is that it's gentle on the substrate. We test pressure on a hidden patch first, especially on older or repaired render. We avoid hitting fixings (vents, lights, satellite dishes) directly, and we mask doors, windows and air bricks. Damage from soft washing is exceptionally rare and only happens where render is already failing — which we'd have spotted at the assessment stage and warned you about.
If the render is in poor condition (cracked, blown or actively flaking), we'll tell you and recommend repair before cleaning rather than risk making it worse.
After the clean
Walls dry quickly in good weather. We tidy up the surrounding area, rinse paths and patios so there's no residue, and walk the job around with you before we leave. We can also apply a clear water-repellent treatment after cleaning if you want extra protection — particularly worthwhile on west-facing walls that take a lot of driving rain.
Frequently asked questions
Will pressure washing damage my render?
Not when done with the right technique. On render we usually soft-wash rather than pressure wash, which uses biocide and low-pressure rinsing instead of brute force. Damage from properly executed soft washing is extremely rare.
How long will the clean last?
Two to three years for most rendered and painted walls. Heavily shaded walls or walls under trees may need a refresh sooner. The biocide treatment we use kills the algae spores so regrowth is significantly slower than after a basic pressure wash.
Can you remove paint splashes from my brickwork?
Usually yes. Paint removal depends on the type of paint, how long it's been there and the brick. We assess on site and tell you honestly if a stain won't come out fully.
Do you clean walls at height?
Yes — we have telescopic lances that reach to around 12 metres safely from the ground. For taller buildings we use scaffolding or cherry pickers, which we can arrange and quote for separately.
Will the surrounding plants be safe?
Yes. We rinse plants down before we start (so the biocide doesn't sit dry on the leaves), and rinse them again after. We avoid spraying directly into beds and we use biocides that break down quickly. We've never had a problem with plant damage.
