Chewing Gum Removal

Chewing gum sticks to pavement, dries grey, and stays there for years if it's not properly removed. On any busy pedestrian area — a high street, a shopping centre, a railway station forecourt, the entrance to a hospitality venue — the cumulative effect of months of dropped gum is that the pavement looks permanently grubby, no matter how much it's swept or jet-washed at standard pressure.

We specialise in chewing gum removal across the North East, using high-temperature steam combined with low-pressure, non-abrasive cleaning that lifts gum off concrete, paving and tarmac without damaging the substrate. The result is a properly clean pavement that looks new again — typically in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional pressure washing.

Why gum is so hard to shift

Modern chewing gum is rubber-based and designed to be elastic. Once it's been pressed onto a pavement and dried in the sun, it bonds tightly to the surface and forms a flat, hard disc that resists scraping, washing and hot water alone. Standard cold-water pressure washing struggles to lift gum without going so high-pressure that it damages the paving underneath.

The professional fix is steam: very hot water (typically 140°C+) at low pressure, applied through a specialist nozzle. The steam softens the gum bond from the surface up, and an integrated detergent helps lift the residue cleanly. The pavement is undamaged and the gum is gone — including the grey shadow it leaves behind, which is what makes a partially-cleaned pavement look as bad as a dirty one.

Most chewing gum removal jobs are best done outside trading or office hours so we don't disrupt the public. We routinely work nights, early mornings and weekends to fit around our customers' schedules. We provide our own water, our own power and our own lighting if needed, and we work behind clear cordons or signage to prevent any risk to passers-by.

Maintenance contracts

Chewing gum is a recurring problem, not a one-off. The single best way to keep a busy pavement looking fresh is a regular maintenance contract — typically monthly or quarterly — where we come round, blitz the new gum, and leave the area clean again. Per-visit cost is much lower than ad-hoc work, and the pavement stays consistently presentable rather than swinging between clean and grimy.
